SAMANTHA LEFTWICH

00:00 / 00:54

In Samantha's words: I’m an Essex based visual artist using vivid and contrasting colour photography to highlight different aspects of my vision loss. The images represent what it’s like for me to see now after developing Diabetic Retinopathy at 24, I have only 5% vision in my left eye with a complete loss of central vision. I have slightly more vision in my right but have sporadic voids due to small bleeds and scarring, the vision is cloudy and blurry as I have cataracts. I’ve no peripheral vision in either eye. I have Charles Bonnets Syndrome which causes visual hallucinations linked to sight loss. I’ve used clouds to depict the voids and loss of peripheral vision, lights depict the visual hallucinations and blurry, almost scratchy imagery to depict cataracts to evoke a tactile response. I have a very active imagination which can be highlighted in my collaboration with artist Lindsey Whitelaw.
